If you are considering starting a candle making hobby, or even a business, there are some candle making supplies that you must have in order to make candles effectively. At the very least, every candle needs to have wax (paraffin, beeswax or soy wax) a wick and some sort of container that holds the hardened wax. Needless to say, the container must be non flammable and able to withstand the hot wax. The wick can be any length and you can also find different widths for bigger or smaller flames.
Since the wax needs to be melted and then poured into the candle holder, you’ll need something to melt it with and a lot of people use a double boiler. Of course, you’ll need to stir the wax as well as check it’s temperature so some stirring utensils and a thermometer might be good to buy. One great accessory that will help ensure proper wick placement is a wick clip. You might also want to invest in a base leveler that will help level off the bottom of your candle - a candle that is wavy on the bottom won’t sit right in the container.
Practical candle making supplies are a necessity, but part of the fun of candle making is the different shapes and sizes so candle molds can be a fun thing to add to your supplies list. You can actually make your own molds if you are clever enough. Buy a mold release spray to help your candles easily slide out of the mold. The store bought ones are usually made from metal or aluminum and if you really want to make things easy on yourself, you’ll invest in a wick holder bar which makes inserting the wick a breeze. When you are buying molds, don’t forget to get some mold cleaner so that you can keep your molds in tip top shape for the next time you make candles.
Of course, candles can be made in different colors and you can purchase different dyes for your candle making. There is a huge variety of ready made colors, but you can also mix them and experiment to make your own unique colored candles.
Today, scented candles are quite popular and you can make those too. Traditionally candles come in vanilla, cinnamon, apple, pine and other “familiar” scents but now adays you can get some really interesting and exotic ones like jasmine, apple pie, and even some that smell like baking cookies. When adding scent to your candles, don’t add too much! Make sure you follow the directions on the scent package.
You can usually buy all the candle making supplies you need to start off for under $100 and you can shop around at craft stores as well as online. You don’t have to buy all the fancy stuff at first , but once you get into making candles, you might want to check out some other fun supplies like candle paint, luster spray and other things that let you decorate the appearance of your candles.
