When it comes to candle making, there are some basic instructions that should be followed. Safety should be your primary concern especially if you make them in your own kitchen as you wouldn’t want one little accident to ruin your house! Therefore, you should always keep a fire extinguisher handy and be sure you have it checked every year. Since wax can drip and be slippery, you want to be very careful to clean up any spills and be sure to use a non-slip mat in front of the stove. Wear the appropriate clothing to protect your skin and make sure you don’t have anything on that can dangle down into the hot wax.

The first step of your candle making instructions is to organize your area. There are 3 basic process to making candles and you want to have one area that is ready and prepped for each. Since you want the process to flow smoothly, you want to use the counter space near your stove - turning and walking across the kitchen won’t be convenient and it will increase the risk of drips and spills. Be sure to have all your supplies - thermometer, molds, wicks, additives, scents, mold spray and the like on hand and ready before you start.

The first step is the preparation. Here you will have decided what types of candles you are making and have all the necessary supplies ready. Make sure you have enough wax chipped so you can add it to the melting pot as needed. You might want to have a scale ready so you can weigh each chip that you are melting - this will help you determine how much scent and dye is needed for the volume of the final candle.

The next step is the melting which most people do on their stove. You need to use a double boiler to melt the wax as it will become useless if it gets too much direct heat.

After your wax is melted, you move to the cooling process and, for this you need a flat table or counter. You candles will need several hours to cool down so it needs to be a place where they can sit undisturbed. That’s why it’s probably not a good idea to start a candle making project right before you have to cook dinner! Make sure the candles are not in direct sun or under an AC or heat vents.
