Once you have a little bit of experience under your belt, you will come to see that there are some inherent problems with the process and might want to explore some of the additives for candle making. There are actually 8 different additives you can use to make the process easier and each one is listed below.
If you want to reduce the temps you need for the wax to melt, then look into stearic powder. This flaky substance is immune to humidity and will help to bring your wax to the melting point at a much lower temperature. You want to use 1 ½ teaspoons per half pound of wax. Be careful not to use too much or it will screw up the wax.
There area a couple of hardeners that come in the form of small beads. 103 Vybar has tiny beads, and Parafline has larger beads. The beads flow into the wax and will not clump even in humidity. These are great to use for scented candles. Use 1 teaspon of either 103 Vybar OR parafline for every pound of wax.
To add a luster to your wax, you might try BHT crystals. This yellow colored powder is actually an antioxidant that is good to use on wax which has been stored as a liquid for long lengths of time.
One popular release agent is Kemamide. This fine ivory colored powder can become clumpy if exposed to humidity so keep it in a cool dry place. Use 1 teaspoon per pound of wax.
If you need a hardener for your candles, try Poly-Ac. This fine white powder can clump if it gets humid so store in a cool dry place. Use 1 teaspoon per pound of wax.
To keep your candles color from fading in the sunlight, you want an UV inhibitor like Poly 400. This product also comes as little beads and should be used 1 teaspoon per pound of wax.
To enhance the color of your candles, consider Chimasorb 81. You don’t need to use a lot - a tiny bit will do. Be careful with storage of this, though as it can get clumped with even the slightest hint of humidity.
You can use these candle making additives to help with the process of melting and hardening your candles as well as to enhance the outcome of your labors. Be sure you use them as stated on the package as using the incorrect amount can cause your candles to become useless.
